Child and Adolescent Counsellors

Support when you’re not sure what your child needs

At Cherry Tree Therapy Centre in Henley-on-Thames, we support children and young people who may be struggling, even when it’s hard to put into words what’s going on.

As a parent, you might have noticed changes, more anxiety, emotional outbursts, withdrawal, school difficulties, or a sense that something isn’t quite right. Often, parents arrive feeling unsure whether counselling is needed, or what kind of support would help.

You don’t have to work that out on your own.

We’ll take the time to understand what’s been happening and help you think about the most appropriate next step for your child.

How we approach support

Children and young people express themselves in different ways.

Some may want to talk. Others may communicate through play, creativity, or behaviour. Our therapists work flexibly, adapting to your child’s age, development, and individual needs.

This might include:

  • Play-based therapy
  • Creative and expressive work
  • Talking therapy for older children and teenagers
  • Support that involves parents where helpful

What matters most is creating a space where your child feels safe enough to be themselves.

Who we work with

  • Children aged 4 and above
  • Teenagers and young adults
  • Neurodivergent children and young people
  • Children with additional or complex needs

Specialist therapists for children & teens

Experienced support using play, creativity, and age-appropriate therapy.

Flexible support for families

Therapy and guidance shaped around your child, family, and circumstances.

Calm, child-friendly spaces

Welcoming, non-clinical rooms designed to help children feel safe.

What You Can Expect

We offer a calm, supportive space where children and young people can express themselves in ways that feel natural to them. Sessions are shaped around your child’s age, personality, and way of communicating, whether that’s through play, creativity, or talking.

Everything is gently paced, with no pressure to open up before they’re ready, and where appropriate, we can include parent check-ins, so support continues beyond the therapy room.

  • A clear starting point for parents
  • Time to talk things through first
  • Guidance on the right type of support
  • Thoughtful matching with a therapist
  • A calm, child-focused therapy space

Parental involvement is handled sensitively and depends on your child’s age and needs. We’ll discuss this with you and agree what feels most supportive.

Fees vary depending on the therapist and approach, typically ranging from £50–£110 per session. Some therapists offer concessions, so please let us know your budget.

Yes. Confidentiality is an important part of therapy, particularly for teenagers. We’ll explain clearly how confidentiality works and when information may need to be shared for safety reasons.

Yes. All child and adolescent counsellors working at Cherry Tree Therapy Centre are appropriately DBS checked and insured.

That can happen, and it’s okay to talk about it. Finding the right fit is important, especially for children and young people. If something doesn’t feel quite right, we can talk it through with you and help you think about what might work better, including finding a different therapist if needed.
