Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy

Understanding the different parts of yourself with curiosity and compassion

Have you ever felt as though one part of you wants to make a change while another part holds you back?

Perhaps part of you wants to slow down, while another part tells you to keep pushing. Or maybe part of you wants to speak up, while another worries about what other people will think.

These inner conflicts are something many people experience. Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy offers a compassionate way of understanding why they happen and how they can begin to change.

At Cherry Tree Therapy Centre in Henley and Buckhurst Hill, we offer Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy as one of several therapeutic approaches. Rather than trying to get rid of difficult thoughts or emotions, IFS helps you understand the different parts of yourself with greater curiosity, compassion, and self-awareness.

Understand yourself

Developing a deeper understanding of your thoughts, emotions and protective patterns.

Reduce inner conflict

Making sense of the different parts of yourself that feel stuck or conflicted.

Build self-compassion

Learning to respond to yourself with greater kindness, confidence and emotional balance.

What You Can Expect

IFS is a collaborative and compassionate form of therapy. Together with your therapist, you will explore the different parts of yourself that may influence your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours.

Sessions move at a pace that feels safe and manageable, allowing you to develop a deeper understanding of yourself while working towards meaningful and lasting change.

We offer:

  • A compassionate, non-judgemental approach
  • Greater understanding of thoughts, emotions and behaviours
  • Support for reducing inner conflict and self-criticism
  • Tailored therapy based on your individual needs
  • In-person or online sessions available

FAQs

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapeutic approach that helps people understand the different "parts" of themselves. Rather than seeing difficult thoughts or emotions as something to fight against, IFS encourages curiosity and compassion, helping people understand why these parts developed and how they can work together more harmoniously.

IFS may be helpful for anxiety, stress, burnout, trauma, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, emotional overwhelm and patterns that leave you feeling stuck or conflicted.

Not necessarily. Your therapist will explain the approach in a way that feels comfortable for you. Many people simply find it a helpful way of making sense of conflicting thoughts, emotions and behaviours.

IFS is widely used with people who have experienced trauma because it offers a gentle and compassionate way of understanding protective responses. Your therapist will always work at a pace that feels safe for you.

Yes. If you're interested in exploring whether IFS may be the right approach for you, we can discuss your needs and help you find a therapist whose way of working best suits you.
