Small Change, Big Impact: How Hydration Supports Teens Through Exam Stress

Written by Lorna Haywood, Psychotherapeutic Counsellor at Cherry Tree Therapy Centre, Henley.

When parents think about reducing exam stress for our teens, we often focus on the practicalities, helping with revision timetables, or making sure they get enough sleep. These are all important, but one simple factor is often overlooked: hydration.

In my counselling practice, my young clients and I often work on what I call “the three pillars of stable mental health”: hydration, nutrition, and rest. Each pillar supports the others, but hydration is key.

Even mild dehydration can affect cognition, slowing memory, weakening concentration, and reducing problem-solving ability. It also impacts mental health, increasing irritability, stress, and low mood (Masento et al., 2014, Nutrients). For teens under pressure, staying properly hydrated can be a surprisingly powerful way to support both their focus and their emotional resilience during mock exams. And yet, hydration is often the first thing to slip.

Why Teens Struggle With Hydration

Plain, room-temperature water isn’t always appealing. So many teens reach for sugary or caffeinated drinks instead, quick fixes that can spike anxiety, disrupt energy, and disturb natural sleep rhythms, leaving them “wired and tired”.

Hydration Hacks for Water Wins

Harness the dopamine: If your teen is nagging for the latest Stanley, or equivalent, maybe it's worth a try! Teenage brains love the novelty of new things, so the dopamine hit of a new bottle can be used to motivate “habit stacking”, linking hydration to revision (“Every time I start a new chapter, I take a sip.”) An insulated tumbler keeps iced water cold, great for sensory grounding resets during breaks too.

Upgrade the flavour: Sugar-free electrolyte drinks make water more enjoyable without the crash. Tonic Health Energy + Hydration is a clean formula, sweetened with stevia. The Mango flavour is taste tested and approved by my own fussy 15 year old and loved by my teen clients.

Go beyond electrolytes: The Energy + Hydration blend adds a full B-vitamin complex (important because B vitamins are often depleted under stress and support energy metabolism) and Panax ginseng, shown to reduce stress and mental fatigue, without the jitters or sleep disruption caffeine can cause.

Rest and Recover: For evening hydration and stressed minds, Tonic Health Rest + Recover offers 2 great flavours with Magnesium, a popular pre-bedtime choice to support restful sleep because it is bound to glycine, a calming neurotransmitter. Lemon balm and adaptogenic Ashwaganda soothe and reduce stress.

Why This Matters

Hydration sharpens focus and steadies mood. It’s a small change that helps teens feel calmer, more resilient, and better prepared for exams.

How Cherry Tree Therapy Centre can help if your teen's Mental Health is suffering

Of course, some teens find exam season tips hard to put into practice, pre‑existing difficulties can tip into overwhelm, and their mental wellbeing may dip below what feels manageable.

With additional training in working with self‑harm, eating distress, and suicidal thinking, Lorna can support young people even when the going gets really tough. Using practical, evidence‑based strategies to help teens build resilience, regulate anxiety, and develop healthier coping routines, your young person can go beyond the mocks and towards the summer exams with confidence.

Lorna is part of an experienced team of Counsellors who work with children, teens, and young people at Cherry Tree Therapy Centre. With specialists in a wide range of concerns, get in touch for help matching with the right support for you.

Talking Openly

Open conversations about exam stress and mental well-being can make all the difference. Whether you’re supporting your teen through revision season or simply reminding them to pause and hydrate, small acts of care help build resilience. Let’s keep promoting a culture where young people feel safe to talk about pressure, balance, and self-care,  because mental health deserves as much attention as academic success.
