John Newell is an accredited member of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society. He offers counselling to adults and young people, creating a safe, respectful, and collaborative space for clients to explore whatever is on their mind.
John works with a broad range of issues, including anxiety, stress, burnout, emotional overwhelm, panic attacks, phobias, low mood and depression, bereavement and grief, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, eating concerns, self-sabotage, procrastination, and life transitions.
He has particular experience supporting people struggling with addiction, whether related to substances, behaviours, or emotional dependency. John also works with clients processing adverse experiences and complex trauma—long-standing emotional wounds that may not always be visible, but which can deeply affect how we feel and relate to the world.
In addition, John enjoys working with transpersonal aspects of the human psyche and supports clients who wish to explore spirituality and existential questions.
His approach is pluralistic, meaning therapy is tailored to each person’s unique needs. This may involve person-centred, open-ended exploration or drawing on tools from CBT. At times, reflection on how early experiences may still be shaping the present is included. At the heart of John’s work is a warm, empathetic relationship—one that helps clients feel understood, accepted, and empowered.
Clients often come to therapy when they feel stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected from themselves or others. Some have a clear reason for seeking support, while others simply sense something isn’t quite right. Together, John and his clients explore what’s going on beneath the surface and work towards greater clarity, relief, or self-acceptance.
Before becoming a therapist, John worked as a commercial lawyer and understands what it’s like to function in high-pressure environments while hiding inner struggles. This experience helps him connect with clients who find it difficult to show vulnerability or who have had to maintain a brave face despite inner turmoil.
John’s aim is not to “fix” clients but to walk alongside them as they reconnect with their inner resources. Therapy provides a space to untangle confusion, process pain, and move towards a more authentic, fulfilling life.
Sessions are available in person at the Cherry Tree Therapy Centre or online. If you’d like to discuss whether John might be the right therapist for you, please feel free to get in touch.
